With the introduction of iOS 14.5 and the widespread adoption of SKAdNetwork (SKAN), Apple also introduced a creative rendering format called SKOverlay. SKOverlay has gained widespread adoption across iOS marketers since it displays rich, interactive ads accompanied by a banner-sized overlay. From this overlay, users are able to install the advertised app in the background without navigating to the App Store to install.

SKOverlay is a widely adopted creative rendering format for iOS campaigns. It improves user experience by enabling in-app installation and is compatible with SKAN measurement frameworks. By displaying the ad directly within the app, SKOverlay eliminates the need for users to navigate away from their current screen. This not only streamlines the app installation process, but also reduces the likelihood of users abandoning the installation due to the extra step of being redirected to the App Store.
How does Moloco render SKOverlay?
The promotional experience presents the user with a banner-sized overlay that includes the promoted app’s icon, name, brief description, and link to the App Store. Users have the option to install the advertised app directly from the overlay without exiting their current activity.
SKOverlay rendering is enabled by default and Moloco strongly recommends all iOS campaigns be run with this setting turned on, as it is critical for performance measured by SKAN.
Important: StoreKit rendering is applied at the app-bundle level and isn’t configurable for individual campaigns.
